A simple (single-row) planetary gear mechanism is the basis of an automatic transmission mechanism. Usually, the transmission mechanism of an automatic transmission is composed of two or more rows of planetary gear mechanisms. A simple planetary gear mechanism includes a sun gear, several planetary gears and a gear ring. The planetary gears are supported by a fixed shaft of the planet carrier, allowing the planetary gears to rotate on the supporting shaft. The planetary gear and the adjacent sun gear and ring gear are always in constant meshing state.

Besides, helical gears are usually used to improve the stability of work. A simple planetary gear mechanism has following characteristics:

- A sun gear, planet carrier and ring gear are all concentric, that is, they revolve around a common axis.

- All gears are always meshed with each other. There is no need to slide gears when shifting. Thus the friction and wear are small and the service life is long.

- The structure is simple and compact. The load is distributed to a large number of teeth so that the strength is high and capable of large load-bearing.

- Multiple transmission ratios are available with one planetary gear set.
